HALO ON BERGEN STREET sublimates the materiality of where and how a painting — or perhaps a sculpture — takes place. As the title suggests, HALO is installed on Bergen Street in front of the gallery. But halos are poised between the earthly and heavenly. As such HALO, while embedded in front of 925 Bergen St, can only be seen by entering through a (less than heavenly) QR code. At that moment the 60 ft torus surrounds and embraces its audience through their smart-phones. The desegno and colore of HALO were composed as an homage to Jacopo Torriti’s frescoes at the top of the ceiling in the Basilica San Francesco in Assisi.
